Description

Label: Many of the photographs in the albums made for tourists include important views of temples and scenery. The more than two hundred picturesque pine-covered isles at Matsushima—literally, "Pine Islands"—were an important tourist destination, as they were considered one of the most beautiful natural sights in Japan. Scenes of Matsushima are often seen in Japanese paintings and woodblock prints as well. This particular island is topped by the Gokaido Temple. Originally built in the 800s the temple was rebuilt in 1604.
