Fateh Raj Singhvi was a high-ranking minister at the court of Maharaja Man Singh (r. 1803-1843), who appears in the painting to your left. Here the minister is shown as a princely figure whose status is conveyed by his royal vehicle-which is carried on the shoulders of four men-and his numerous attendants. To further emphasize Fateh Raj Singhvi's importance, the artist has depicted the minister larger in scale than the figures beside him.

It is only through an inscription on the reverse side of this painting that the identity of its main subject is known. Fateh Raj Singhvi's face is heavily stylized, with emphasis placed on prominent features such as his sweeping nose, heavy jowls, and double chin. This approach to portraiture, in which actual appearance is subordinated to the articulation of a few identifying features, is encountered in many Indian paintings.
