Hidden Gold: Mining its Meaning in Asian Art
    March 4, 2016 - May 8, 2016

To celebrate the Asian Art Museum’s fiftieth anniversary in San Francisco, we invite you to discover Hidden Gold: Mining its Meaning in Asian Art. Why an exhibition focused on gold? Most importantly because the Asian Art Museum conserves a wealth of stunning art worked in gold, from sculptures to textiles to paintings. Some of these works have never been displayed, while others have been hiding in plain sight in the museum galleries. Still others incorporate gold in ways that may not be immediately obvious. In every case, we explore how the special physical and symbolic properties of gold converge to create artworks that almost magically link the realm of time with that of eternity.
